photo of band members playing instrumentsThe New Horizons Band program involves more than 180 New Horizons Bands internationally. the program is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The New Horizons concept applies to seniors typically (but not necessarily) in large band programs as well as smaller ensembles such as stage bands, Dixie bands, orchestras and chamber music groups.

The New Horizons Band program is designed for beginning, intermediate and advanced adult musicians who wish to learn, continue, or hone their musical skills — even if you cannot read music.

The fun and interactive musical environment allows people to play a musical instrument and perform in a band environment. New Horizons is living proof that, when it comes to learning to play a musical instrument, it truly is “never too late." By joining one of these groups, you can fill your life with music, new friends, fun and accomplishment.

Frequently Asked Questions

I would like to participate, but I don’t think I have musical talent. No one else in my family has ever done anything in music. People say that I’m “tone deaf.”
Professor Roy Ernst, founder of the New Horizon Band concept, says that EVERYONE has musical talent. “In more than 40 years of teaching, I’ve never found anyone who couldn’t learn music,” Ernst states. If no one in your family makes music, you would become a great example for them by starting.

How do I know what instrument I should play?
Your preference is the most important factor and the starting point. If you love the look and sound of a trombone, for example, you should start with that. Check with your director to see if you have any physical conditions that could be a problem. It’s rare when that is the case. If your heart isn’t set on a certain instrument, ask your director what the band needs. You will be even more important if you play an instrument that fills a special need.

Do I need to provide my own instrument?
Yes. We can, however, provide some of the larger instruments such as the tuba, baritone horn, french horn and others. They are available from the university for a small rental fee. These can be arranged at the first class session. We also provide percussion instruments. Percussionists will need to bring their own sticks/mallets. Instrument rental programs are often available from local music stores. Call Susan Dubbs at sdubbs@ou.edu Email link or call 325-2891 if you need more information on obtaining an instrument.

Is there an information session?
Yes! There will be an orientation session in the Catlett Music Center Band Room. This is a time to openly discuss your concerns with the directors, instructors and other participants and hear the exciting events planned for the semester.

How do I Join? Is there a cost to participate?
You can register by contacting our office or by printing out our Registration Form and mailing or bringing it to our office at: New Horizons Band, 1700 Asp Avenue, Room 209, Norman, OK 73072, or you can also register the first night.

I have more questions, whom can I contact?
